Bee lauds TBS in speech, says US should be mad about poor treatment of illegals — not ‘one bad word’

Instead of facing a show cancellation Thursday over crude remarks she made about Ivanka Trump, Samantha Bee accepted an award during the evening's Television Academy Honors, which were held in Hollywood.

During her acceptance speech, she lauded TBS for its support and attempted to shift the focus from her graphic remarks to the poor treatment of illegal immigrants.

What's the background?

During Wednesday's airing of her TBS show, "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee," the namesake host called Ivanka a "feckless c**t" over what she apparently considered to be a tone-deaf social media post that featured a photo of Ivanka and her child cuddling.

The photo was widely panned by celebrities, who suggested the photo was tone-deaf because Ivanka shared it amid reports that the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement reportedly lost track of about 1,500 immigrant children during the final three months of 2017.

In response to the photo, Bee said, “You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c**t!”

Bee also suggested that Ivanka "put on something tight and low-cut" to help sway her father’s policies:  “He listens to you! Put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to f***ing stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes.”

Bee later apologized, but that didn't stop at least two advertisers from bailing on her show.

On Twitter, Bee wrote, "I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it."

So what did she say after the apology?

While accepting a Television Academy Honors award Thursday night, Bee said, “You know, the thing is our show is steeped in passion. Every week I strive to show the world as I see it, unfiltered. Sometimes I should probably have a filter. I accept that. I take it seriously when I get it right, and I do take responsibility when I get it wrong.”

She added, “We spent the day wrestling with the repercussions of one bad word, when we all should have spent the day incensed that as a nation we are wrenching children from their parents and treating people legally seeking asylum as criminals.”

“If we are OK with that, then, really, who are we?” she asked.

Bee also added that she would not stop “shouting [about] the inhumanities of this world from the rooftops and striving to make it a better place. But in a comedy way.”

Later in her speech, Bee thanked TBS for their support.

“You always have our back, and we appreciate that so deeply,” she added.

According to IndieWire, "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" was honored for the show's coverage of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements.

Anything else?

President Donald Trump decried Bee's remarks and TBS's response.

In a tweet, the president wrote, "Why aren’t they firing no talent Samantha Bee for the horrible language used on her low ratings show? A total double standard but that’s O.K., we are Winning, and will be doing so for a long time to come!"
