Vandals smash windows, spray-paint 'ABOLISH ICE' on sidewalk at Nebraska GOP headquarters

Vandals smashed windows with bricks and spray-painted "ABOLISH ICE" on the sidewalk at the Nebraska Republican Party state headquarters in Lincoln, according to police.

A newspaper carrier notified Lincoln police about the incident early Tuesday morning. Authorities believe the vandalism took place sometime between midnight and shortly after 3 a.m.

The damage could cost thousands to repair, Executive Director Kenny Zoeller told The Associated Press.

No suspects have yet been identified, but police are reviewing surveillance cameras of nearby businesses.

Has anything like this happened before?

In December, someone spray-painted "Resist" on the front windows of the building, Zoeller said, adding that threats of violence occur frequently.

What did Democrats say?

Jane Kleeb, chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party, condemned the attack.

“I think it’s a terrifying place that our country is in right now, where people are resorting to violence, vandalism and death threats to political leaders, staff members and candidates,” Kleeb told the Omaha World-Herald. "And it's happening to all of us."

Kleeb said Nebraska's Secretary of State candidate Spencer Danner, who's black, has faced race-based name-calling and threats from Republicans and Democrats.

Last month, Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.) called on her supporters to harass members of the Trump administration.

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up and if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” Waters said at a toy drive in Los Angeles.

What else?

Capitol Police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly threatening to kill and chop up Republican Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) and his family with an ax.

Paul has faced other attacks over the past year or so, including one that left him with broken ribs.

In November, Paul's neighbor tackled him while he was mowing the lawn at his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Rene Boucher, 59, claimed the attack was not politically motivated, but rather in retaliation for unsightly tree branches, sticks, and leaves that had been piled up on their property line.

The senator was also on the baseball diamond when an anti-GOP liberal opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice. Several staffers were shot, including Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who was seriously injured.

Paul was not injured in the shooting.
