A Bojangles' employee reportedly targeted a North Carolina police officer as the officer stopped at the restaurant for a bite to eat Monday night.
The officer, Jones County Sheriff's Office First Sgt. Daniel Pridgen, spoke with Blue Lives Matter, where he detailed his alleged experience with the restaurant.
What are the details of the incident?
Pridgen visited a Bojangles' Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits in Richlands, North Carolina, Monday night for a meal.
The officer said that, when he arrived at the drive-thru pick-up window, an employee told him that some of his food would take an additional few minutes to prepare and asked him to pull over to a parking spot while he waited.
Pridgen said he waited for a while, but eventually went inside to inquire about the food. Pridgen received fresh food to compensate for the delay, and he went on his way.
When he arrived at home, he opened up his food to find that someone at the restaurant had apparently scrawled "FU" in frosting on top of one of his biscuits.
Pridgen, who has been with the sheriff's department for more than a decade, said that he didn't expect this kind of treatment.
According to Blue Lives Matter, Pridgen wrote about the incident on Facebook.
His post read, "I am literally at a loss. How professional Bojangles! It took you 25 minutes to make my food, and as I stand there and wait patiently (in uniform) while my other food is getting cold, this is the thanks I get from the lovely staff of Bojangles in Richlands! Pure hatred, I appreciate it, unfortunately I didn't notice until I got home to eat. #bojangles' #itsbotime #tands."
The post apparently attracted a high amount of attention, as the officer told the outlet that he received a phone call from the restaurant's manager within 30 minutes of the post appearing on Facebook.
How did the restaurant react?
The outlet reported that the manager's husband is also a member of law enforcement, and she was not happy about the treatment Pridgen reportedly he received at her restaurant.
Pridgen said that the company's vice president also phoned him that evening and assured the officer that the executive was working hard to right the wrong.
A day later, the restaurant's management phoned Pridgen and told him that the employee who had allegedly written the offending message had been terminated.
In a second Facebook post, Pridgen wrote, "The incident from last night was handled accordingly by management personnel. Bojangles' and Tands inc. have done an admirable job handling the situation expeditiously. Their due diligence is greatly appreciated. Thank you."
He told Blue Lives Matter, "From what I understand, they have a zero tolerance policy for things like that. They are pro-law enforcement."
Pridgen added that he will absolutely return to the restaurant in the future, despite his experience.
"I will 100 percent return to that restaurant," he said. "They handled it appropriately, so I have no issue with them."
A spokesperson for Bojangles' told Blue Lives Matter that an employee was "immediately terminated" after an investigation into the incident.
"We became aware of the incident that took place at our Richlands restaurant last evening and took immediate action," the spokesperson wrote in an email to the outlet. "After contacting the customer directly and conducting a thorough investigation, the employee responsible was immediately terminated."
The statement added, "This type of behavior is not consistent with our values or our culture, and it will not be tolerated at any Tands restaurant. We apologize to anyone who was offended by the actions of this former employee."
