Immigrant teen facing 3 murder charges is released from jail, allowed to return to school

An immigrant teenager in Houston, who is facing three murder charges and one aggravated assault charge, was released on bond this week and has been permitted to return to school.

What are the details?

Ahmedal Tayeb Modawi, 17, is accused of killing three valets after crashing into them while driving a white Infiniti G37 earlier this month, KPRC-TV reported.

Modawi, who is from Sudan and is not a U.S. citizen, was charged with three counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury for his role in the crash.

His bond was originally set at $350,000, or $100,000 for each murder count and $50,000 for the aggravated assault relating to a passenger who was in the vehicle with him.

Less than a week later, however, Harris County Judge Chris Morton reduced each murder bond to $60,000 and the aggravated assault bond $40,000, dropping the total amount from $350,000 to $220,000.

Modawi has now made bail and has been released into the public, the outlet noted. Per conditions of the bond, the teenager must wear a GPS ankle monitor and is under house arrest until his next hearing on Dec. 15, but he is permitted to attend school and go to church.

What's the background?

Modawi, who also worked as a valet but for a different business, was allegedly driving recklessly and doing donuts in a nearby parking lot in a client's car when a Houston police sergeant spotted him and activated his sirens, KHOU-TV reported.

According to charging documents, Modawi responded by speeding away in an attempt to evade police, traveling at upwards of 60 mph in a 30-mph zone.

During the getaway, he struck three other valets — 22-year-old Eric Orduna, 23-year-old Nick Rodriguez, and 18-year-old Fnan Measho — before driving through a ditch and crashing into a pole.

Modawi, along with a passenger in the Infiniti G37, reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident. Modawi reportedly broke his leg while the passenger broke both legs and was ejected from the vehicle.

The three individuals that Modawi struck were pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators determined that Modawi was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
