NYC mayor bans height and weight discrimination, says body type has nothing to do with health
May 26, 2023
The Democratic mayor of New York City outlawed discrimination against people on the basis of weight and height in the Big Apple.
Adams signed the law into practice on Friday while surrounded by "fat liberation" supporters.
"We all deserve the same access to employment, housing and public accommodation, regardless of our appearance and it shouldn't matter how tall you are, or how much you weigh," said Adams at the signing ceremony.
Other local and state governments have banned height and weight discrimination including Michigan; Santa Cruz; San Francisco, California; Washington, D.C.; Madison, Wisconsin; and Binghamton, New York.
Attending the signing was Tigress Osborn of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, who said the bill should lead other governments across the globe to enact similar legislation.
"We all know, y'all know, New York is the global city," she said. "And this will ripple across the globe in terms of showing to people all over the world that discrimination against people based on their body size is wrong and is something we can change."
Critics of the bill say that it will lead to more damaging and frivolous lawsuits.
NAAFA, meanwhile, says on its official social media account that "fat liberation" is a part of social justice.
"Fat liberation is part of a larger movement for social justice, which seeks to challenge and dismantle systems of oppression that marginalize and discriminate against individuals and groups based on their identities," the group tweeted to its 2,609 followers.
"We can't legislate attitudes, but we can, do what we, everything that's in our power to ensure that people are treated equally," Osborn claimed.
