'I'm still a Reagan Republican': McConnell reportedly says ending Ukraine aid would be 'a huge setback for the United States'

Halting assistance to Ukraine would mark "a huge setback for the United States" and the nation's reputation as the free world's leader, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said, according to the Associated Press.

"Honestly, I think Ronald Reagan would turn over in his grave if he saw we were not going to help Ukraine," the lawmaker said, according to the outlet. "For myself, I'm still a Reagan Republican," he said. "And I think that's the best path for us in the future. But look, in our democracy, the voters make that decision."

The U.S. has provided billions of dollars worth of assistance to help Ukraine as that country fights back against a Russian invasion, but while some in the GOP, like McConnell, support additional aid for the Eastern European nation, other Republicans oppose it.

McConnell took office as a U.S. senator in 1985, during the time of Reagan's White House tenure. His current term will end in early 2027.

Former President Donald Trump blamed McConnell earlier this week after Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) lost the Bluegrass State's gubernatorial contest to incumbent Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear.

"Daniel Cameron lost because he couldn't alleviate the stench of Mitch McConnell," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I told him early that's a big burden to overcome. McConnell and Romney are Kryptonite for Republican Candidates. I moved him up 25 Points, but the McConnell relationship was 'too much to bear.'"
