Former first lady Melania Trump announced that her mother has died.
"It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija. Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy," Trump tweeted.
The New York Times reported that Knavs was 78.
Comments poured in from people offering their condolences.
"Erika and I extend our deepest condolences to First Lady Melania Trump and her family as they mourn the death of her beloved mother," GOP Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida tweeted. "Mrs. Trump was an incredible First Lady who carried herself with impeccable poise, character, and love—values that her mother undoubtedly passed down. May Amalija's legacy live on through all those who knew and loved her."
"This is heartbreaking news. Andy and I are praying for you and your family. Our deepest condolences," Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida wrote.
"Lourdes and I would like to express our deepest condolences to President Trump and First Lady @MELANIATRUMP on the passing of her beloved mother, Amalija. Our prayers are with the Trump family during this time," Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida tweeted.
Melania's husband, former President Donald Trump, is currently seeking the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.
