Michigan Democrat renounces DSA over its support of terrorist attack: 'There is no place for moral equivocation'

A Democratic U.S. representative from Michigan renounced his membership in the Democrat Socialists of America after it issued a statement blaming the barbaric acts of terrorism by Hamas on Israelis.

Rep. Shri Thanedar issued his renunciation in a statement on social media Wednesday.

"Today, I am officially renouncing my membership in the Democratic Socialist of America," wrote Thanedar.

"After the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel, which included the indiscriminate murder, rape, and kidnapping of innocent men, women, and children, I can no longer associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms. Sunday's hate-filled and antisemitic rally in New York City, promoted by the NYC-DSA, makes it impossible for me to continue my affiliation," he continued. "I stand with Israel and its right to defend itself. There is no place for moral equivocation in the face of unadulterated evil as we have seen from Hamas."

Thanedar went on to say that he had not changed his goals or ideals but that he could not continue as a part of the DSA.

"I strongly believe that ending my association with DA serves my constituents' interests as they expect me to represent them by helping to build a better, more just world, not fanning the flames of hatred," he concluded.

The statement from the DSA was criticized by many, especially after it held a rally in Times Square in New York Times on Sunday night in support of the terrorist attack.

"In solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist 75 years of occupation and apartheid FREE PALESTINE!" read the statement from the DSA.

Thanedar's statement received more than 1.4 million views on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.
