Navy SEAL who said he killed Osama bin Laden arrested in Texas

The former Navy SEAL who claimed to have killed Osama bin Laden was arrested in Texas.

Robert J. O’Neill, 47, was arrested on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas. O'Neill was hit with a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury and a Class C misdemeanor charge of public intoxication, according to the Dallas Morning News. However, Collin County jail records only list the assault charge.

O'Neill was released on $3,500 bond the same day.

The Navy SEAL was reportedly in town to record a podcast episode at a local cigar lounge.

O'Neill did not respond to a request for comment from the New York Post.

In 2016, O'Neill was arrested for drunk driving in Montana. Prosecutors later dropped the charges after it was said that he was using prescription medication at the time to treat a condition stemming from his military service.

In 2020, O'Neill made headlines for not wearing a face mask during a flight when it was mandated during the pandemic. He was banned by Delta Airlines.

O'Neill is the former SEAL Team 6 member who garnered celebrity after he claimed to have shot and killed 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden in the U.S. military operation codenamed "Operation Neptune Spear," which was the raid of the terrorist's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.

Others have disputed O'Neill's claims of assassinated Osama bin Laden, and said the terrorist leader was already dead when O'Neill arrived at the compound. Matt Bissonnette claimed that another SEAL Team 6 member fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden.

O'Neill has been awarded received two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, and a Joint Service Commendation Medal for his military service.
