NYC Mayor Adams says he's 'not familiar' with company at center of campaign investigation

New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams stated Sunday that he is "not familiar" with the company at the center of an investigation into the politician's campaign.

During an interview with WPIX's Dan Mannarino, Adams was asked whether he knew anyone from Brooklyn-based KSK Construction Group, which allegedly has ties to a Turkish hotel chain.

"Not of my knowledge," Adams replied. "I am not familiar with this organization at all. It's one of the many different groups and organizations that contributes to the campaign."

"I cannot tell you," he continued, "how many thousands of people contribute to our campaign. I attend so many different fundraisers, meet so many different people throughout the part of raising funds."

The mayor explained that his campaign has "very strict compliance" standards for receiving donations.

"Before any check is deposited, our compliance teams review those checks to make sure they meet not only the standards of the [Campaign Finance Board] but my stringent standards as well," he added.

On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the home of Adams' chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. At the time of the search, Adams was en route to Washington, D.C., to meet with White House officials and other mayors to discuss the migrant crisis.

Upon learning about the raid, Adams immediately canceled the meetings and returned to New York City to address the situation.

Adams told WPIX on Sunday, "I was notified by the team that something was taking place with the campaign staffer, and I wanted to be here to make sure we fully complied. I have one of the best compliance teams that any campaign has ever had."

"If anyone did anything inappropriate outside of our compliance procedures, law enforcement will determine that," he added. "This is new and evolving. I have not been contacted by any law enforcement agency, and no one has been told they did anything wrong."

The New York Times reported last week that Adams' campaign was under investigation for receiving alleged foreign donations from the government of Turkey. The FBI seized financial records, travel records to and from Turkey, and records of interactions with representatives of the Turkish government, the outlet reported.

The FBI has reason to suspect that KSK Construction Group and Bay Atlantic University in Washington, D.C., may have served as straw donors for the Turkish government.

The New York Post reported that eleven employees of the construction company donated to Adams' campaign in 2021. At least nine of the individuals each donated $1,250 on the same day, according to records reviewed by the outlet.

Adams also revealed that he has communicated with Suggs since the FBI's search of her home.

"I have communicated with her since this incident took place," he told WPIX. "She's communicating with the team's attorney, and they're going to continue to do so."

Neither Adams nor Suggs have been charged with a crime.
