6 dead, at least 15 injured from shooting in downtown Sacramento – Timeline of 'chaotic' event

Six people are dead, and at least 15 are injured from a shooting in downtown Sacramento early Sunday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, a mass shooting occurred in a popular nightlife area with restaurants and bars not far from the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings play their home games.

"Officers located at least 15 shooting victims, including 6 who are deceased," the Sacramento Police Department wrote on Twitter. "Conditions (of the victims) unknown at this time. Please avoid the area as a large police presence will remain and the scene remains active."

Berry Accius of Sacramento's Voice of the Youth – a mentorship and training organization – said the scene was "chaotic."

"A lot of victims with blood, just watching some of the families that didn't know if their loved one was alive, running, trying to figure out what was happening, people distraught, people discombobulated," Accius told KXTV. "It was just horrific."

"I'm just shocked that somebody would come here to a place where it should be safe and do something as heinous as this with multiple victims, not only just shot but dead in our city," Accius added. "Right here in downtown, in a safe space.”

Accius told the Associated Press, "The first thing I saw was like victims. I saw a young girl with a whole bunch of blood in her body, a girl taking off glass from her, a young girl screaming saying, 'They killed my sister.' A mother running up, 'Where's my son, has my son been shot?' You know, commotion, trauma. It’s just a lot of things that, you know, you don’t want to see."

Another eyewitness told KXTV, "As soon as we we heard the first gunshots, we just, all we did was just hide. That's the first thing that came in their own mind at least."

ABC 10 put together a timeline of the Sacramento shooting:

  • 2:01 a.m.: Reports of shots fired near 10th and K Street
  • 2:02 a.m.: Report of an assault with a weapon at a parking garage on 11th Street
  • 2:03 a.m.: Report of five people injured
  • 2:08 a.m.: Sacramento Police Department calls in all units to respond to the situation
  • 2:11 a.m.: CPR is being administered to victims
  • 2:22 a.m.: First report of multiple fatalities
  • 2:27 a.m.: Report of a gun found at 1029 K Street
  • 2:46 a.m.: Victims begin arriving at local hospitals

An investigation is ongoing, and authorities have cordoned off an eight-block area.

Sacramento Police Department Chief Kathy Lester provided an update. Lester is asking the public for any information that will assist in the investigation and to find the shooter.
