President Trump tweets that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is leaving the White House

And he hints at a possible future political career

President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is leaving his administration at the end of June and he hinted at a possible political career next for her.

"After 3 1/2 years, our wonderful Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be leaving the White House at the end of the month and going home to the Great State of Arkansas," the president tweeted.

"She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job!" he added. "I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas - she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!"

The president did not indicate whether he had a replacement in mind for the position at the White House.

Sanders tweeted a response from her official White House account.

"I am blessed and forever grateful to @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to serve and proud of everything he's accomplished. I love the President and my job," she tweeted.

"The most important job I'll ever have is being a mom to my kids and it's time for us to go home," she added. "Thank you Mr. President!"

Sanders has had many tense interactions with journalists during her tenure as press secretary in defense of the policies and statements from the president.

CNN reported that Sanders had floated the idea of running for governor of Arkansas, her home state, in private conversations. However, they note that the office will not be open until 2023 unless Gov. Asa Hutchinson steps down early.
