A subway operator found a severed human leg on the tracks in the Bronx borough, according to the New York Police Department.
The leg was found on Saturday afternoon at about 1 p.m. on the northbound No. 4 subway line between 170th and 167th streets in the neighborhood of Mount Eden, according to police.
“The leg was removed and the investigation remains ongoing,” read a statement from the NYPD.
Investigators are trying to find out who the leg belongs to and how it got on the tracks. The leg has been turned over to the city's medical examiner as part of the investigation.
Police said they have not determined whether it belongs to a woman or man.
Sources told WPIX-TV that the leg was found by an MTA worker who was doing a sweep of the elevated line when he saw the leg. They stopped the train before it could run over the leg.
The leg was not wrapped in anything and was found out in the open, according to police. They said there were no tracks in the snow leading to the leg.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said service was briefly interrupted over the finding.
Transit officials across the country in San Francisco have warned against the dangers of "surfing" on moving trains. In the past month, two teenagers have fallen and died while trying to "BART surf" on a moving train as a part of a social media challenge.
"Nobody who works in transit wants to deal with anything involved. Nobody wants to have to place a phone call to your significant others or family telling them that your body is in 15 different pieces in the trackway," said a transit worker on Reddit about the deaths.
"No train operator deserves to be haunted by the results of some individual's stupidity, and a sense of guilt that follows," he added.
