Scalise 'in complete remission' and will return to DC next week, his office says

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), who has been battling cancer, is now "in complete remission," according to a statement from his office.

"Leader Scalise has successfully completed his autologous stem cell treatment and has been medically cleared to resume travel. He is in complete remission and will be returning to Washington next week for votes. He is thankful for his positive prognosis, and for the support of his medical team, family, colleagues, and fellow Louisianans," the statement reads.

Earlier this week, impeachment articles targeting Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas failed to clear the House chamber as Democrats and several GOP lawmakers voted against passage. But when Scalise returns, Republicans will likely be able to pass the impeachment resolution, sending it to the Senate, where it will almost certainly fail to clear the threshold necessary for conviction.

Scalise, who has been serving as a House lawmaker since early May 2008, announced his multiple myeloma diagnosis last year.

According to mayoclinic.org, "Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help fight infections by making proteins called antibodies. Antibodies find and attack germs."

In January, Scalise's office had released a statement noting, "Last month, Leader Scalise successfully completed induction chemotherapy and had a positive response. It has now been determined he is eligible for an autologous stem cell transplant. He is currently undergoing the transplant process, marking a significant milestone in his battle against cancer."

Last year, the congressman threw his hat into the ring to become House speaker, but he ultimately dropped his bid.
