13-year-old student stabs teacher with pencil, hits her in back of the head with backpack for confiscated pair of scissors

A middle school student in Florida stabbed his teacher in the classroom after being disciplined for using a pair of scissors to sharpen a pencil.

A 13-year-old at the Golden Gate Middle School in Naples, Florida, was charged after detectives suspected that he had attacked his teacher.

According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, the child was being disruptive after he had a pair of scissors confiscated from him, which he had been using to sharpen a pencil.

The boy began to cry, so the teacher gave him a hall pass to go and see a guidance counselor. She reportedly placed her hands on his desk to give him the note, but the boy tore up the pass and stabbed the female teacher in the hand with a mechanical pencil.

Furthermore, the student hit the teacher in the back of the head with a backpack while she was requesting assistance for his removal. The teacher then took the other students to a "safe space," deputies said.

The teacher's injuries were described by police as "superficial injuries to her hand and a contusion to the back of her head for which she sought medical treatment on her own."

Police took the 13-year-old into custody. He was charged with battery on a public or private education employee, which is a felony. He was also charged with the disruption of school function, a misdemeanor.

The school's principal, Dr. Jennifer Knutowski, sent a message to parents after the incident.

"Hello Golden Gate Middle School parents," she began.

"Today, an incident occurred in one of our science classrooms. GGM administration and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office promptly responded. A student was removed from the classroom and arrested by deputies on charges of battery on a public or private education employee and disruption of a school function. Safety is our number one priority, and we will continue to take measures to keep our students and staff safe," the principal said, according to WINK.

The middle school serves approximately 1,100 students, according to GreatSchools.org, and the school has a five-star rating.
