Terrifyingly similar to horror movie 'The Shining,' man caught on video smashing door with pickaxe while victim in room screams for help

Surveillance video caught a moment Monday inside a southern California home terrifyingly similar to a famous scene featuring Jack Nicholson in the 1980 horror movie "The Shining": A man was smashing a door inside a home with a pickaxe while a victim inside the room screamed for help.

What are the details?

According to KTLA-TV, the driver of a Kia sedan was captured on video around noon heading down the 24300 block of Peacock Street in Lake Forest when a crash is heard. The driver smashed the vehicle into a home on the Orange County street, the station said.

The station said a security camera shows the suspect — whom witnesses identified as Tyler Graves — running down the street.

He then ran to a home in the 22100 block of Pheasant Street, where he rents a room, KTLA said, adding that he's caught on another video trying to ram through the home's front door with his shoulder.

Eric Li, the suspect’s landlord, told the station, “He’s scared. He needs to enter the house as soon as possible, but he entered the wrong passcode. You cannot open the door. He tried to use his body to break in.” Video shows the suspect eventually breaking through the door.

Li added to KTLA that after the suspect got inside, he chased Li into the backyard, grabbed a pickaxe, and went after him with it.

"My parents, they grow a lot of vegetables in the back yard," Li noted to KABC-TV. "They have a lot of tools."

Li added to KABC that he thought he was a "dead man."

"So, I crossed the street and asked the [neighbor] for help," Li recounted to KTLA.

A housemate of Graves told KTLA that Graves went after a neighbor's gardener and then returned to the residence they share and tried to break into the housemate’s room with the pickaxe.

'Sounded like somebody was being tortured'

Video recorded just outside the room shows the nearly out-of-breath suspect hitting the door with the pickaxe and putting holes in the door as the housemate screams for help.

Andy Lopez told KABC he heard "screaming and yelling at the house, sounded like somebody was being tortured."

The housemate — who didn't want to be identified — told KTLA he called 911 just before Graves was seen entering his room.

“He kept hitting it harder and harder. I noticed that he was starting to get tired, so I tried to look for a good point in time where he might want to take a little break from swinging the axe for a second, and when he did that, I swung the door open and kind of disarmed him,” the housemate recounted to KTLA.

The housemate told KTLA that he then tried to calm the suspect — and with that, arriving Orange County Sheriff's deputies initially mistook the housemate as the attacker.

“So, I dropped the axe and got down on the ground and complied with them," the housemate told the KTLA. "And at that point, the attacker came up behind me while I was laying on the ground, and he picked up the axe again."

Deputies noted to KTLA they used non-lethal force to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

"There was some terrible yelling and screaming. And the police went in they pulled out their weapons, and we heard like five gunshots," Lopez told KABC, adding that "when they brought the suspect out he was pretty bloody."

Sgt. Mike Woodruff of the sheriff's department told KTLA that "the deputies on scene, based on statement and his behavior, believe he is under the influence of some substance." Woodruff added to KTLA that no one else was injured.

KABC said the "erratic man" was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the car crash and then was taken to jail.
