Texas Southern tuba player punches aggressive heckler mid-song and doesn't miss a beat

A tuba player for Texas Southern University threw punches at an aggressive heckler who was reportedly yelling at the band member during a performance.

During an early November 2023 football game between TSU and Jackson State, the school's Ocean of Soul marching band was videotaped performing a classic fight song in the stadium's bleachers, surrounded by fans.

Multiple angles captured a football fan, with an unknown beverage in hand, yelling at the tuba player. It is unclear, however, what sparked the altercation in the first place.

In one video, the man is seen heckling the band member for at least 25 seconds before the first punch by the tuba player.

The uniformed musician threw a total of four punches with varying success before the man eventually fell over. The second angle shows the heckler fall between a set of bleachers before being attended to by another football fan. A band official is also seen approaching the man to seemingly assess the situation.

According to the New York Post, the tuba player can be heard yelling “f**k off, bitch" to the man, who was reportedly a Jackson State fan.

However, the tuba player was able to keep one hand on the instrument at all times throughout the altercation, then immediately returned to playing within a second of the heckler falling over.

It is unclear whether the heckler sustained injuries or if police were called, but the university has reportedly begun investigating the incident, according to the Houston Chronicle.

"Texas Southern University is aware of an incident involving a member of the Ocean of Soul marching band during a recent away game," a statement from the university read. "The incident is under investigation. The University is implementing additional measures to ensure the safety of all band members during performances," the statement added.

Jackson State did not respond to other inquiries.

At the time of this publication, one version of the video had been viewed over 3.3 million times.

Unfortunately for Texas Southern University, the team was unable to win the battle on the field and lost to Jackson State 21-19.
