Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) warned Friday that Beto O'Rourke's threat to confiscate AR-15s and other similar semi-automatic firearms from American citizens will backfire on the Democratic Party, unraveling decades of work to progress the gun control agenda.

Coons told CNN he believes O'Rourke's comments will become the rallying cry of Second Amendment advocates for years to come.

"I frankly think that that clip will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying that Democrats are coming for your guns," Coons said.

"I'm a gun owner," he continued. "My sons and I have gone skeet shooting and hunting and, frankly, I don't think having our presidential candidates, like Congressman O'Rourke did, say that we're going to try and take people's guns against their will is a wise either policy or political move."

Coons explained that neither the majority of America nor the majority of the Senate will support the level of gun control O'Rourke advocates. Instead, he urged Democrats to focus on "what we can get done."

During the Democratic debate on Thursday, O'Rourke admitted that, if he is elected president, he will institute the forced, mandatory confiscation of all AR-15s and other similar semi-automatic firearms.

"Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15 and your AK-47," O'Rourke declared.

O'Rourke responded to Coons Friday, writing on Twitter that "the time for letting status quo politics determine how far we can go is over."

Still, Democrats are sounding the alarm that O'Rourke's comments will have dire consequences for gun control advocates. A Democratic aide who spoke with CNN said O'Rourke's threat "only feeds into the NRA's narrative that Democrats are going to take away your guns."

"If Beto wants to actually solve of these problems, he should help negotiate or encourage his colleagues to pass common-sense background checks," the aide told CNN.
