Monstrous thugs recorded 'barbaric' torture and sexual assault of a mom before murdering her, Alabama police say

An Alabama mother was allegedly abducted, tortured, sexually assaulted, and finally murdered by a group in what police are calling a "deplorable and sickening" crime.

Birmingham police arrested eight suspects connected to the murder of Mahogany Jackson, a 20-year-old mother of one child.

On the morning of February 25 at about 8 a.m., Jackson contacted her mother saying, “Send the police apt 3 held hostage don’t call," and also sent her location to her sister.

The next day, her body was found with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Her body was found under a mattress at an illegal dumping site in Birmingham.

On Monday, Birmingham Police Homicide Detective Mark Green testified about five videos that showed the attack on Jackson.

Police believe that she had gone to the home of 24-year-old Brandon Pope to hang out with friends but was instead assaulted by a group there. The first video showed Jackson naked and being beaten by 25-year-old Teja Lewis while 23-year-old Si’nya McCall kicked her. They then stuffed her into a trunk and took her to a second location.

Investigators say the second location was an apartment shared by Lewis and McCall where videos showed the group beating and torturing the victim. They allegedly handcuffed her, spat on her, slapped her, and pistol-whipped her.

One video allegedly captured part of the sexual assault committed against Jackson. Police said she was forced to commit sex acts while a gun was pressed to the back of her head.

Police charged 23-year-old Giovonnie Clapp and 25-year-old Blair Green with felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree sodomy.

McCall was charged with felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree sodomy while Lewis was charged with felony murder.

18-year-old Jeremiah McDowell, 25-year-old Francis Harris, and Brandon Pope were charged with capital murder during a first-degree kidnapping and capital murder during first-degree sodomy.

23-year-old Ariana Lashay Robinson was charged with felony murder and kidnapping.

Birmingham police Chief Scott Thurmond said the crime was one of the worst he had ever seen in his law enforcement career.

“The actions displayed by these defendants were barbaric and have no place in society,’’ said Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr. “The senseless and inhumane treatment perpetuated on young Mahogany Jackson was very disturbing and violent.”

Some of the videos have made their way to social media. This has led Gail Maddox, the mother of the victim, to beg and plead that people stop posting them and sharing them with her daughter's family members.

“That’s my child. Please stop. I can’t take it,’’ she wrote on Facebook.
