Video: Border Patrol fires crowd-control projectiles during tense clash with large group of migrants who attempted to rush across southern border

On Monday, a large group of migrants camping out in Juárez attempted to rush across the southern border into the United States, the El Paso Times reported. The migrants retreated into Mexico when Border Patrol officials responded to the tense exchange by firing crowd-control projectiles.

Venezuelan migrants recently expelled from the U.S. as a part of the Biden administration's new agreement with Mexico have set up a massive tent city along the southern bank of the Rio Grande. The migrants remain close to the border in hopes that they will have a chance to cross into the U.S. soon.

Since October 12, the United States has returned approximately 1,800 illegal Venezuelan migrants to Mexico. The Mexican government granted the expelled migrants a 180-day visa. Juárez Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuellar is now pressuring the Mexican federal government to also issue work authorization for the influx of new arrivals.

Earlier on Monday, a group of migrants marched in the streets of Juárez demanding entry into the U.S., the El Paso Times reported. The protesters carried a large cloth painted to resemble the U.S. flag. Instead of stars, the blue corner of the flag read, "We the migrants built America."

Later that day, several dozen migrants attempted to rush the southern border into El Paso, Texas. One migrant waived a large Venezuelan flag, and another migrant carried a large Honduran flag.

A video from the tense scene captured Border Patrol officers forming a line to pressure the large group of migrants to withdraw and return across a low-running section of the Rio Grande river.

Border Patrol agents alleged that they were assaulted by the migrants and responded to the chaotic exchange by firing three rounds of crowd-control projectiles.

"One of the protesters assaulted an agent with a flagpole, at which time agents responded by initiating crowd control measures," a Border Patrol spokesperson told the New York Post. "These measures included the use of the authorized less-lethal force pepperball launching system."

Customs and Border Protection told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the migrants assaulted a border officer with a flagpole and another migrant threw a rock that injured one of the officers.

CBP noted that the incident is currently under review.

"Customs and Border Protection's Office of Professional Responsibility will review the incident. The situation is still ongoing, further information may be provided as it becomes available," CBP reported.
