Woman crushes, traps fingers while changing a tire — so she phones 911 using her toes

That's innovation

A 54-year-old South Carolina woman dialed emergency services with her toes after both hands were crushed during a tire change on the side of an interstate highway.

What are the details?

According to WCSC-TV, the unnamed woman's vehicle had a flat tire while driving on Interstate-95 near Walterboro, South Carolina, on Sunday.

The woman — who WCSC reports is a Charlotte, North Carolina, resident — reportedly pulled over to the side of the road, where she attempted to change the tire. Colleton County Fire-Rescue said that as the unnamed woman was fitting on the spare tire, the jack slipped and wedged both hands between the tire and the car's fender.

A spokesperson for Colleton County Fire-Rescue told the station that she was in "excruciating pain" for 45 minutes before being able to contact first responders.

"She was trapped alone on the side of the dark interstate, experiencing excruciating pain," the spokesperson said.

According to the station, it took her 45 minutes to free her foot from her shoe and call 911 with her toes.

"After many attempts she was able to dial 911 with her toes and advise them of her predicament," a spokesperson told WCSC. "Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the rural stretch of I-95."

The station reported that the woman "suffered severe injuries to both hands and all her fingers."

"Using the prybar, they were able to free one hand," the spokesperson said. "Engine 26 arrived a short time later and the crew deployed a Holmatro Hydraulic Spreader to lift the car. This freed her other hand."

What happened to the woman?

After freeing her, emergency responders administered pain medication and transported the woman to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The woman's current condition is unknown at the time of this article's publication.
