Listen: Oregon residents free to pump their own gas have a surprising reaction

Never read the comments … or do, when they’re as hilarious as the reaction to a new Oregon law allowing people in some counties to pump their own gasoline.

What happened?

Oregon lawmakers passed a bill last summer making it possible for people in counties with 40,000 residents or fewer to pump their own gas. People in rural Oregon are accustomed to full-service gas stations, and judging from the comments on a local news outlet’s Facebook post, they aren’t happy about the change.

“I say NO THANKS! I don't want to smell like gasoline!” a self-described “native Oregonian” wrote in one comment.

“Not a good idea, there are lots of reason to have an attendant helping, one is they need a job too,” another commenter wrote. “Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly.”

Is Oregon the only state with this rule?

Just Oregon and New Jersey have laws that ban people from pumping their own gas – the rest of the country seems to handle self-service just fine.

The new law giving people the option of pumping their own gas is only effective in 15 of 36 counties in Oregon.

Pat and Jeffy talked about this funny example of what can happen when you roll back government regulations on today’s show.
