Today on “Pure Opelka,” Mike Opelka drew attention to a young man who may be paralyzed for life due to one freak incident on the rugby field. Roberty Paylor has been hospitalized since May 6, which caused him to miss the championship win.
Robert Paylor was on the five-time champion University of California Berkeley rugby team and missed the championship game, hospitalized since May 6.
The win was emotional for the Bears in light of Paylor's injuries, which left his lower body paralyzed and partially paralyzed his arms. Coach Jack Clark teared up in a post game interview, saying that the team "pulled a lot of courage out of Robert Paylor," and that “he’ll be proud that we played hard.”
The Paylor family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover costs after insurance is exhausted. The Christopher Reeve Foundation states the average expense for his injuries could total over $1 million the first year. They have raised nearly $665,000 so far for his healing and rehabilitation fund.
