'Fat cat' Dems enjoy beach retreat in Puerto Rico amid longest shutdown in US history

Democratic members of Congress fly to Puerto Rico on chartered jet and enjoy special performance of the hit Broadway show 'Hamilton'

Last weekend, as the partial government shutdown dragged on into its fourth week, Democratic members of Congress showed their concern for the 800,000 federal employees who aren't getting a paycheck by chartering a private jet to Puerto Rico to enjoy the island's beaches and a special performance of the hit Broadway show "Hamilton" with their families.

"It's been great for the Democrats in Puerto Rico, until the cameras showed up," Glenn Beck said on Monday's radio program. "And then, when the cameras showed up, it got ugly — and I mean that in every possible way. I don't know if you've seen the picture of the fat cats on the beach."

Glenn was referring to the now widely circulated photo of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) below:

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted her response Sunday:

GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tweeted:

Donald Trump Jr. responded on Twitter as well:

A planning memo for the retreat, hosted by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC boasted, "This year's winter retreat promises to be our most widely attended yet with over 220 guests, including 39 Members of Congress and CHC BOLD PAC supporters expected to attend and participate!"

"So while people are struggling ... they're on the beach in Puerto Rico," Glenn said. "Oh, by the way, there was also in attendance 109 different lobbyists, R.J. Reynolds, Facebook was there, Comcast, Amazon, PhRMA, Microsoft, Intel, Verizon, and of course all the unions."
