Watch: Here’s why people want a WWI monument honoring soldiers taken down

What’s happening?

The “Peace Cross,” a monument in Maryland that honors soldiers who died in World War I, is under threat of being taken down after nearly a century. Atheist activists began trying to get the 40-foot-tall memorial to fallen soldiers removed several years ago.

Tell me the latest news:

The monument controversy could be on its way to the Supreme Court. After an appeals court ruled that the “Peace Cross” was unconstitutional, its advocates have vowed to take the case to the highest court in the land if they are denied a request to be reconsidered.

The New York Times reported:

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit declared this month that the Peace Cross, which sits on state-owned land in Maryland and has been maintained with public funds, was unconstitutional, a ruling that supporters of the monument warned could result in a “cleansing” of memorials on public grounds across the country.

Glenn’s take:

Glenn couldn’t help getting sarcastic while talking about this story on today’s show: “For 92 years, this cross has entangled the government in religion in ways that has wreaked untold havoc on the minds and the hearts of Maryland citizens … or not.”

Clearly, the memorial honoring WWI soldiers has sat in Prince George’s County peacefully for nearly 100 years and has not interfered with anyone’s religious practices (or lack thereof).
