Uh-oh: Avenatti and Kavanaugh-accusing client have been referred to DOJ for criminal investigation

“Creepy porn lawyer” Michael Avenatti and his client Julie Swetnick have been referred to the Department of Justice for criminal investigation over statements the two made during the confirmation “process” of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

According to a Thursday press release from the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, referred the pair for a “potential conspiracy to provide materially false statements to Congress and obstruct a congressional committee investigation.” The release also notes that the investigation would be for three separate crimes.

“When a well-meaning citizen comes forward with information relevant to the committee’s work, I take it seriously. It takes courage to come forward, especially with allegations of sexual misconduct or personal trauma,” reads a statement from Grassley. “For the law to work, we can’t just brush aside potential violations. I don’t take lightly making a referral of this nature, but ignoring this behavior will just invite more of it in the future.”

During the hearings of Kavanaugh’s nomination, Swetnick and Avenatti initially accused the father of two of being part of a group of serial gang rapists, and though the New York Times reported her claims, the newspaper could not independently corroborate her story.

Swetnick’s story later fell apart during a television appearance highlighting her allegations.
