Why do we respect Christopher Columbus? Ronald Reagan explains

It wasn’t all that long ago that Americans used to thank Christopher Columbus.

On October 3, 1988, President Ronald Reagan delivered remarks before signing the Columbus Day Proclamation, hailing Columbus for his bravery, his vision, his leadership, and his spirit.

“Put it all together and you might say that Columbus was the inventor of the American dream,” Reagan said.

President Reagan’s remarks remind us why we celebrate Christopher Columbus’ legacy — and the legacy of immigrants who followed Columbus to America and made this country great.
