'Terrifying and exhilarating': Elon Musk unveils plans to use brain implants to merge humans with AI

'Perhaps the biggest thing in all of human history'

On Wednesday, while the rest of America obsessed over President Donald Trump's tweets, Elon Musk made a stunning announcement: Neuralink — Musk's brain-machine interface startup — plans to directly link humans with computers using thread-like polymer electrodes implanted directly into the brain. Neuralink is planning its first human trial as early as next year.

Speaking onstage at the California Academy of Sciences Tuesday evening, Musk said Neuralink aims to "achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence" and the human brain. "Merging with AI" will improve the lives of people with brain disabilities, but, as Musk explained, Neuralink's primary goal is to allow humans to keep up with AI.

"Even in a benign AI scenario, we will be left behind. With a high-bandwidth brain machine interface we can go along for the ride and have the option of merging with AI," Musk said. "After solving a bunch of brain related diseases, there is the mitigation of the existential threat of AI. This is the point of it."

Neuralink has developed a system of polymer threads with electrodes that can be implanted directly into the brain and connect wirelessly to devices.

"It basically Bluetooths to your phone," said Musk.

"Perhaps the biggest thing in all of human history was announced yesterday," said Glenn Beck on Thursday's radio program. "It's both terrifying and exhilarating. Man will be either more free than he has ever been at any time in human history, or ... he may wipe himself out."
