Amazing Video: Deaf Woman Hears Herself Speak for the First Time

Sarah Churman was born deaf. At 29 years old, she had never heard the sound of her own voice until she received a hearing implant two months ago. Watch her incredible reaction when the device is activated and she hears herself for the first time:

"I had an implant put in 8 weeks ago called The Esteem Implant by Envoy Medical," Churman wrote on her YouTube channel. "I was born deaf and have worn hearing aids from the age of 2, but hearing aids only help so much. I have gotten by this long in life by reading lips. This was taken as they were activating the implant."

In the video, shot by her husband, Churman laughs and claps her hand to her mouth when the device is turned on. She covers her face and cries, overcome by emotion.

Churman said she's been complimented her whole life on how well she speaks.

“I don't really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English," she wrote. "My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. I've worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in…only thing I can say is ‘God is good.'”
