Possible Set of Lungs Found on L.A. Sidewalk

Update: Lungs came from an animal

Los Angeles County officials are investigating what appeared to be a set of lungs found on a sidewalk near a business on Sunday.

The City News Service reported a woman made the discovery in L.A.'s Compton neighborhood, took a picture of what she found and contacted the the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. Deputies responded and called the coroner's office to the scene, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"It was right there on the sidewalk at the start of a driveway," Lt. Jack DeMello told City News Service. "You'd think someone would see someone throw it out there."

Additional testing will be done to determine whether the organ is in fact lungs, and whether it is animal or human.

"We don't know what they are," Sgt. Robert Dean of the sheriff's department told the Times. "It's really weird."

The sheriff's department received no other calls about the find.
