NC Gov. Bev Perdue: Abortion Ban Would Mean a Return to 'Coat Hangers in the Bathtub' & 'You'll See Women Die

"People have got to stand up"

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue (D) made a number of shocking claims on "Hardball" with Chris Matthews Monday, broadcasting from Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention.

The panel was discussing social issues when Perdue said of conservatives: "May I make a point?  I’ve never seen a bunch like this here so against regulation, Chris.  They want less, less, less. And then it comes to a woman in the bedroom and they want to control everything. I don’t get that.”

She did not note that a Democrat administration has taken over a significant percentage of the American health care system.

When Chris Matthews asked Perdue to elaborate, she said that a ban on abortions will only drive the practice underground, bringing back the deadly days of "coat hangers in the bathtub."

"You'll see women die," she asserted.

Perdue added that Republicans are trying to "ram through" an end to Roe v. Wade, saying it is the "end game" in every state in America and "right out of Karl Rove's playbook."

The governor concluded, referencing widely-denounced Todd Akin: "People have got to stand up-- women [who are] standing-- it might be their daughter or their granddaughter who is raped, and there's no such thing as 'legitimate rape.'  A rape is a rape, and that young woman should have a choice about what to do with her body and her life."
