Can You Guess What This Giant Eyeball Found on a Florida Beach Came From?

"very, very fresh"

Among the many oddities to wash up on a shoreline, animal parts are not necessarily unusual. But a giant eyeball described to be the size of a softball found on a Florida beach has created quite a stir.

The eyeball was found Wednesday on Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale, by Gino Covacci, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Covacci described it as "very, very fresh and "still bleeding" when he put it in a plastic bag.

Experts are unsure as to what animal exactly the blue eyeball belongs, but they speculate a large fish, giant squid or whale. The Sun-Sentinel reports Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center professor Charles Messing saying the best guess thus far is that the organ came from a swordfish, which are common in the area where it was found.

The organ is currently being analyzed by Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.
