Footage Captures Terrifying Moment an Iranian Oil Rig Disappeared Into the Persian Gulf
February 04, 2013
A $40 million oil rig in Iran's South Pars gas field collapsed into the Persian Gulf last week, nearly taking with it the workers who were trapped on the collapsing structure:
Luckily, no one was hurt, according to local reports.
“The structure belonged to Iran's Revolutionary Guard and the country is now calling for foreign aid to help recover the gas platform which sank 80m to the seabed,” news.com.au reports
Although the incident happened last week, footage has only now become available, the report adds.
“The incident is the latest setback [for] Iran's oil industry,” Business Insider’s Michael Kelly notes.
“Last month Iran’s oil minister acknowledged in a report that oil sales were down 40 percent and income dropped 45 percent in the previous nine months, largely because of U.S. sanctions aimed at curbing the country's disputed nuclear program,” Kelly adds.
