Obama During Surprise News Conference: We've Fired the Acting IRS Commissioner Over Tea Party Scandal

President Obama announced Wednesday during an unscheduled presser that he had requested -- and received -- the resignation of Steven Miller, acting Internal Revenue Service commissioner.

Miller took over as acting commissioner on Nov. 9, 2012, two years into the IRS’ political targeting, after his predecessor, Doug Shulman, vacated the position.

Miller will leave the IRS in June, not immediately, as per the terms of his assignment.

"It is with regret that I will be departing from the IRS as my acting assignment ends in early June," Miller wrote. “This has been an incredibly difficult time for the IRS given the events of the past few days, and there is a strong and immediate need to restore public trust in the nation’s tax agency.”

News that Miller has stepped down from his position comes six days after it was first revealed that the fed agency had been targeting conservative groups with “substantial delays” and often “unnecessary” information requests.

Obama, who has been criticized for appearing uninterested in the scandal, as the Associated Press puts it, declared, "I am angry about it" and said the American people had a right to be angry as well.

The president in his incredibly brief presser vowed to hold all responsible parties accountable, adding that he has instructed Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to follow up on Inspector General’s audit of the agency:
