Unexpected Incident Between Man and Police Dog – You Won't Believe Who Bit Who

There's a news adage that goes a little something like this: When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a man bites a dog, that is news.

Well, news has been made. A police dog was bitten when a K-9 unit arrived a San Jose house for backup to deal with a California man wielding a kitchen knife and resisting arrest.

According to KTVU-TV, a Santa Clara County Sheriff deputy responded to a call about a family disturbance Monday evening. Before the deputy had even exited his car, the man ran toward the cruiser with the knife.

"The subject then punctured a tire and broke out multiple windows by punching and smashing them," Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup told the San Jose Mercury News.

At this point, the deputy called for reinforcements. Among them was a K-9 unit and the dog named Ski. In the standoff, KTVU reported that police unleashed Ski, but when the dog reached the man, he attacked it. Stenderup said he "basically assaulted the dog by biting, punching and choking it."

During this scuffle, he dropped the weapon and police were able to apprehend him.

The man also had stabbed himself three times and was taken the hospital and treated with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office updated about Ski's condition on Facebook saying the dog "had some minor bumps and bruises but is expected to return to work soon."

We should point out that some dog bite incidents are newsworthy and have been reported as news, but there are also a surprising number of "man bites dog" encounters as well.
