I Was Very Upset, Very Hurt': Military Family Speaks Out After Vandal Destroyed Flag Display Welcoming Home Marine Son

"I think I wanted to cry more than anything when I saw that."

A Texas military family is publicly expressing their outrage after an unknown vandal destroyed a flag display they had erected outside their home to welcome home their Marine son.

According to Sonja Norman, a display of about 30 flags was ruined by an individual who snapped the tiny flags in half outside their home near Houston.

"This is what I came home to," Sonja Norman told KHOU-TV. "They were stuck in the ground and you can tell they were broken in half."

"I was very upset, very hurt," she continued. "I think I wanted to cry more than anything when I saw that."

According to KHOU, the family was asked last week by the Veterans of Foreign Wars to line the entrance of their subdivision with flags aimed at honoring Private First Class Noah Norman, a Marine temporarily coming home on leave.

"What it says to me is that we are living in very dark times in this country that you cannot display pride for the military anymore," Sonja added.

"I think it's really disgraceful and really wrong especially because if it hadn't been for my brother-in-law, they wouldn't have the right even the freedom to break the sticks in half," said Melissa Norman, who is married to the oldest Norman son.

No police report has been filed, according to KHOU.
