A 20-Year-Old Woman Died Last Week of Something That Scientists Can't Figure Out

"She’s just a miracle. Just an angel."

Brooke Greenberg died at 20 years young last week, but most would believe she was even younger. That's because she appears almost infant-like.

The Baltimore woman had a condition that baffled scientists for the two decades she was alive. Doctors eventually settled on calling it Syndrome X. It was a condition that prevented Greenberg from aging, but doctors weren't sure just how.

Greenberg's condition, which her own father called like the fountain of youth, is similar to that seen in other children being studied for their anti-aging properties. The girl's parents, Howard and Melanie Greenberg, told WBAL-TV they believed their daughter was the only one with Syndrome X.

In a 2005 NBC News feature, Greenberg's pediatrician, Dr. Lawrence Pakula, said geneticists couldn't find abnormalities with the then 12-year-old's chromosomes. Other specialists and medical histories were reviewed for clues as well.

"She’s just a miracle. Just an angel," Greenberg's father told NBC at the time.

“While the outside world may have noticed Brooke’s physical stature and been puzzled by her unique development state, she brought joy and love to her family,” Andrew Busch, a rabi who delivered Greenberg a eulogy at her funeral Sunday, told the New York Daily News.
