Suspect Apprehended After Shooting at New Mexico Middle School; Two Students Taken to Hospital (UPDATED)

UPDATE, 4:33 p.m. ET: At an afternoon press conference, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez confirmed that two students were injured during Tuesday's shooting. She also added that one staff member was hurt.

“This individual opened fire on the audience that was in the gym," Martinez said. "We can confirm two students were injured a boy and a girl as well as a staff member.

According to the governor, the shooting was stopped by a staff member that "walked right up to him (the shooter)" and asked him to put down the firearm.

"He was also assisted by a state police lieutenant who was dropping off his own child," she added, before asking people to "keep these children in your prayers."

State Police Chief Pete Kassetas said that authorities believe the suspect used a shotgun in the shooting and that the individual concealed it before opening fire. No motive is currently known.

The 13-year-old injured girl has been upgraded to serious condition.

UPDATE, 12:57 p.m. ET: A 14-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl are in critical condition and were airlifted to a hospital in Texas, according to a spokesperson, KOB-TV reported.

A source additionally told KOB-TV that a 13-year-old has been taken into custody.

Police say a suspect has been apprehended after a shooting at a middle school in New Mexico Tuesday morning.

Three students have been injured in the shooting that took place just before 8 a.m., KRQE-TV reported.

A hospital official reportedly said one injured 14-year-old has been airlifted to a Texas hospital for medical treatment.

One parent of a 12-year-old student who goes to Berrendo Middle School recalled the moments she learned there was a shooting at her child's school.

"It was horrible — horrific," Alisha Dominguez told KRQE-TV. "I can't even process what's going on right now."
