Fireball Streaks Across Maine Sky Unlike 'Anything That I've Ever Seen Before

"It just struck me as odd."

Most fireballs are usually spotted at night, when the contrast between the dark sky makes a flaming space rock particularly apparent. But Bruce York saw a ball of light falling from the sky in Maine on Saturday in broad daylight.

On YouTube, York wrote that he saw the fireball around 5 p.m. in Oxford County and quickly got out his cellphone to take video evidence.

"It didn't look like anything that I've ever seen before," York told WMTW-TV. "It didn't look like any footage I've ever seen of a meteorite or a comet. It just struck me as odd."

Watch the footage:

Edward Gleason, an astronomer with Southworth Planetarium at the University of Southern Maine, viewed the clip and gave WMTW his assessment.

He said he thinks it is more is more likely "space junk" falling, but doesn't want to completely rule out the possibility of a meteor.
