Kids being left in hot cars has been hot news across the country this summer especially. But instead of just calling the cops, shoppers in Texas took matters into their own hands when they saw two children crying in the back seat of a locked Jeep Monday.
Gabriel Del Valle took video with his cellphone of the rescue, showing some in Katy, Texas, trying to smash the windows with their hands. Then someone got out a hammer.
“It was a crazy situation,” Del Valle told KHOU-TV, which noted the temperatures were higher than 90 degrees. “The kids were in there crying. I mean you would understand. It’s real hot."
Even after a window was smashed in, those helping had trouble unlocking the doors due to a child-lock mechanism, Del Valle said.
Watch his footage:
KHOU reported that the police were not called in the incident, and the mother, who was getting her hair cut at the time, begged those to understand she had made a mistake.
Update: Other witnesses have come out to say that the mother didn't intentionally leave her children in the car to get her hair cut, but that her keys accidentally became locked in the car while she was putting the kids in their car seats.
Del Valle, who took video footage of people smashing the car windows, told KHOU that when he came out of his shop, he saw the mother coming out of the hair salon.
But other witnesses and surveillance video showed her in another shop before the incident with her two children.
“When she finished, she went outside, putting her kids in the car like normal. When she was finished putting them in the car seat, I guess that’s when it locked, and that’s when everything happened," a witness later informed KHOU of the event that took place after the mother finished up an errand.
"She was screaming, trying to let the little girl to open the door," a witness told the news station.
In the end, witnesses said the mother was only trying to get her children out of the car as quickly as possible and others stepped in to help her.
