James Patterson tells us that James Joyce's 'Ulysses' "convinced me that I shouldn't be a serious novelist"

During our conversation with the prolific James Patterson, we had the opportunity to ask him for his three favorite books.

Below are the titles he recommended, followed by his commentary.

1. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriela Garcia Marquez

"One of the most magical books I've ever read."

2. Ulysses by James Joyce

"I'm a big Ulysses fan. The powerful effect that had on me was...it convinced me that I shouldn't be a serious novelist, but I can write genre fiction."

3. The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth

The Day of the Jackal

"'The Day of the Jackal' was important for me because I hadn't read a lot of thrillers...I went...'This is good, and I can write a story like this I'm pretty sure.'"

"'The Book Thief' is a terrific book for kids maybe 11-15 or so. Very very good."
