Reporter Asks Michael Sam If He Believes NFL Teams Cut Him Because He's Gay — and He Answers

“Do you think that you coming out had anything to do with it, or do you think it was just the level of talent you went up against after college?”

Michael Sam made brief stints on two NFL practice squads after he came out as gay prior to the 2014 NFL draft. However, both teams ultimately decided Sam wasn’t skilled enough to make the cut.

Months later, Sam is apparently suggesting that his sexual orientation may have had something to do with him being cut and why no other NFL teams have signed him

“Do you think that you coming out had anything to do with it, or do you think it was just the level of talent you went up against after college?” TMZ asked.

“I think I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year ... so I don't think it had to do with talent,” Sam responded.

Sam confirmed that his first priority is still playing in the NFL. He also said the reality show that he was supposed to star in prior to the draft will likely not happen.

Sam made headlines after becoming the first-ever openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team.
