Valentine was named after the day on which she was found.
But she wasn't shown love on Valentine's Day — she was savagely wounded and abandoned by the side of the road in rural Florida.
“Valentine was shot twice and then went to get up and got hit by a car,” rescuer Amy Roman told WFOR-TV. “We drove out to the middle of nowhere [to find her] and by 11:30 we had her in our car screaming in pain.”

The 2-year-old American bulldog is now recovering thanks to the care of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida and Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists, but she's an example of a brutal, growing problem.
“It’s getting worse daily," said Roman. She said her rescue group picked up 32 dogs in January alone and has vet bills of more than $40,000 — all because Floridians are abandoning and harming their dogs at an unprecedented rate.
“This is a mentality war," she said. "It’s like the Wild Wild West out here in rural Miami."
