Pat Robertson's Claims About Liberals, Radical Islam and 'Decapitating People' Stir Controversy

"This is not some crusade for freedom, it is a return to bondage."

Christian TV host Pat Robertson is under fire after claiming on Wednesday's "The 700 Club" that the American left is rebelling against "the established order of western civilization" and seemingly embracing radical Islamic ideology.

"You know folks, what's happening is the so called left, the liberals want to rebel against the established order and the established order of western civilization is basically Christian," he said on CBN's "The 700 Club." "It is based on the gospel, it is based on the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and so if somebody wants to rebel against that then anything else goes."

Robertson went on to discuss violent behaviors associated with Shariah law under radical Islam, claiming that the left is seemingly embracing the overarching ideology behind these horrific actions.

"So here comes an ideology out of Saudi Arabia, 7th Century Saudi Arabia, talking about persecution of women, cutting off hands, decapitating people, butchering whole populations because they happen to share a different faith and the so-called left is saying, ‘Oh, well this is the ideology we want,'" Robertson continued. "And you say, are you crazy? This is an outrageous return to barbarism."

He accused the left of wanting to undermine and abandon the freedom that has "brought this tremendous civilization."

"[The left] is doing it in America, it is doing it in Germany, it is doing it all over Europe," he said. "This is not some crusade for freedom, it is a return to bondage."

After Robertson's comments attracted the attention of Right Wing Watch, among other liberal critics, his representative Chris Roslan told the Christian Post that the televangelist was speaking about religious persecution and the left's abandonment of Christian sentiment.

"He's talking about how the left is undermining Christian values that are the basis of our nation," Roslan said. "And how once that starts to happen, then anything goes and certain things like Shariah can come into the mix."

Robertson used the example of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Muslim-turned-atheist who has never been shy about criticizing the Islamic faith. Controversy over her past statements led Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, to withdraw an honorary degree she was scheduled to receive during commencement last year — a decision she called “deplorable.”

"The fact that Brandeis – Louis Brandeis was supposed to be one of the champions of the law of the United States – and a university named after Louis Brandeis withdrew and offer of an honorary degree to this woman because of her stand against radical Islam," Robertson said. "That's how bad it is. Don't think that this is the new freedom folks, it isn't."
