"I'd like to offer my deepest condolences to the family of [1st Sgt.] Peter Andrew McKenna, a brave soldier we had the honor of meeting in Afghanistan," Tatum said.

"He tragically lost his life in an attack on one of the bases we visited on our USO Tour back in February. Let's always remember to thank the men and women who serve this county and so often sacrifice their own lives for ours," the actor continued.

McKenna, 35, was killed Friday during an attack on a coalition facility in Kabul. The sergeant was back in the U.S. visiting his family in Bristol, Rhode Island, as recently as last month for a hometown Fourth of July celebration, just before being deployed on his fifth tour of duty to Afghanistan.

The Green Beret had also served on one tour of duty in Iraq, the Boston Globe reported.

Tatum posted the same photo on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, with the same caption to honor the fallen soldier.
