Texas Governor Has a Request for Law Enforcement to Perform Moment Slain Deputy’s Funeral Begins

“Respect and pride in our law enforcement must be restored in this state and nation."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement Wednesday requesting that officers across the state turn on their red and blue lights for one minute at 11:00 a.m. this Friday, the same time slain deputy Darren Goforth's funeral is scheduled to begin.

In the statement, Abbott also issued a statewide call for citizens to stand with law enforcement.

“Respect and pride in our law enforcement must be restored in this state and nation,” he said. “It is time to unite in solidarity to support the men and women who serve and protect our communities."

"I ask that communities across Texas support this cause for unity and remember the essential role that law enforcement plays in keeping Texas safe and strong," Abbott added.

The governor said that patrol cars will also line the north drive of the Capitol Friday to be part of the display in flashing lights.

Goforth was ambushed and fatally shot multiple times over the weekend while pumping gas into his cruiser. He left behind a wife and two children.
