One Firefighter Killed, Another Injured When Man Opens Fire As They Respond to Call

"With profound sadness I announce the line of duty death..."

One Maryland firefighter was killed and another was injured Friday when a suspect opened fire as the pair responded to a medical emergency call, authorities said.

Prince George's County Fire Department Chief Marc Bashoor said firefighter John Ulmschneider, 39, died as a result of his wounds. The other firefighter, Kevin Swain, was in serious, but stable condition.

The two arrived at a home after receiving a call a man inside may need medical attention. The door was locked and the firefighters attempted to force entry to conduct a welfare check. As they tried to gain entry, the man who had been unresponsive fired several rounds, police said.

A civilian was also wounded, but not seriously injured, Prince George's County Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III said at a news conference.

The suspect was taken into custody.
