Trump statement on Sessions' recusal blames Democrats for 'total witch hunt!

President Donald Trump released a statement on Facebook Thursday about his Attorney General recusing himself from investigations on the Trump presidential campaign.

Sessions was pressured by Democrats and some Republicans who said that it was improper for him to head such investigations after admitting that he neglected to reveal communications with a Russian diplomat when asked during a confirmation hearing.

Statement from President Donald J. Trump

Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional. This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win.

The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election and now, they have lost their grip on reality. The real story is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total witch hunt!

The statement continues the administration's dogged insistence that the only scandal that should be investigated is where the administration leaks are coming from. It also supports Sessions' contention that he merely misspoke and was referring to any interactions he had as a member of the Trump campaign, and not as a Senator, the position he held at the time.

Democrats and other critics of the Trump administration have accused him of perjuring himself before the confirmation committee, and some have demanded that he step down from his position.

Earlier Thursday Trump was asked by a report if he had confidence still in Jeff Sessions, and he responded, "total!"

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) has been especially combative and critical, saying that the investigations into Trump's ties with the Russians is about "saving our democracy."

Sessions defended himself against the attacks in a press conference Thursday where he also announced that he would be recusing himself from investigations into the Trump campaign.

The entire episode mirrors the Mike Flynn debacle where initially the former national security advisor had denied any contacts with Russian authorities, then admitted lying about it, which led to his resignation. Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer is saying about Sessions now what he said then about Flynn - it's a cover-up looking for a crime.
