Democrat mayor resigns after these heinous accusations come to light

After months of battling accusers who said he had molested them as children, the mayor of Seattle is resigning from his position.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced Tuesday that he intended to resign just hours after the newest allegation was revealed from a fifth accuser.

Murray is a Democrat and the first openly gay mayor of Seattle.

"While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business," he said in a statement.

"To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff," he added, "I am sorry for this painful situation."

What are the facts?

In July, the Seattle Times uncovered a CPS report about his alleged abuse that was previously believed to have been destroyed. The Oregon Child Protective Services report concluded in 1985 that Murray had molested his foster son.

“In the professional judgment of this caseworker who has interviewed numerous children of all ages and of all levels of emotional disturbance regarding sexual abuse," the report read, "Jeff Simpson has been sexually abused by... Edward Murray."

Murray responded by denying he was guilty, and pointed to the fact that he was never charged with the crime. The Multnomah County prosecutor, however, said at the time that they were unsure they could meet the high legal standard to prove the accusations, but did not say he was innocent.

Who is the fifth accuser?

The fifth accuser revealed his claims in an interview with the Seattle Times on Tuesday. He is a younger cousin of the mayor, and said he was molested when he was 13 years old by his cousin when they shared a room in his mother's home.

“There would be times when I would fake sleeping because I didn’t want him touching me,” he said. “And that’s when he would molest me. And my mother would be right there in the house, she’d be in the living room … watching TV, at that time it was probably “M*A*S*H.” And my sisters would be in their rooms, sleeping. And I would be in my room, and he would be in there, molesting me.”

Murray said he would resign at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
