Only in 2017: Trump's ex calls herself the 'first lady,' Melania hits back, the internet goes wild

What's the story?

First lady Melania Trump fired back at President Donald Trump's first wife, Ivana, after Ivana joked on ABC's "Good Morning America" that she was the true "first lady."

"I have the direct number to White House, but I no [sic] really want to call him there because Melania is there,” Ivana said Monday. "I don't want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that because I'm basically first Trump wife.”

“I’m first lady, OK?" she laughed.

Ivana was featured on the morning show to promote her new book, "Raising Trump," which features stories about her time being married to Trump while raising their three children, Donald Jr, Ivanka, and Eric.

How did Melania respond?

The first lady's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, released a statement Monday afternoon on behalf of Melania that sharply criticizes Trump's first wife.

"Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and the President. She loves living in Washington, DC, and is honored by her role as first lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. This is unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise," Grisham said.

Why does it matter?

It doesn't.

But the whole internet is sure freaking out like it does. This has probably already gotten more attention than President Trump's tax plan.
